As the leaves begin to turn and the air cools, many people start to feel that familiar tickle in the throat or stuffy nose. But how do you know whether you’re fighting seasonal allergies or the start of a cold? The symptoms can feel surprisingly similar. Congestion, sneezing, fatigue… But the causes are quite different.
At Foundation Chiropractic, we see many patients this time of year who just want to breathe clearly again and get their energy back. The good news is that your body already knows how to find balance... Acupuncture simply helps it get there faster.
Allergies vs. Cold: What’s Really Happening
Allergies are your immune system’s overreaction to specific triggers, such as pollen or mold. Colds, on the other hand, come from viruses that your body must actively fight. Both can cause inflammation, drainage, and fatigue, but allergies often persist longer and are often accompanied by itchiness or watery eyes.
How Acupuncture Helps
Whether you are suffering from allergies or have a nasty cold, acupuncture can help you find relief. Because at Foundation Chiropractic, we know that acupuncture works by improving circulation, regulating the immune response, and clearing energy blockages that keep your body from adapting to seasonal changes. Many patients find that after a few sessions, their sinuses open up, their breathing improves, and that “foggy” feeling starts to fade.
Acupuncture can help to strengthen the Qi (vital energy) of your lungs and immune system. When used regularly, acupuncture may even reduce your sensitivity to certain allergens over time.
* Make sure you stay on any and all medications that have been prescribed until speaking to your PCP or allergist (i.e., EpiPen or inhaler).
Simple Ways to Support Your Body at Home
Even though we always recommend acupuncture to help you through, there are tips and tricks that you can do at home.
Stay hydrated to thin mucus and ease congestion
Limit dairy and sugar, which can worsen inflammation
Diffuse eucalyptus or peppermint essential oils for clearer breathing
Get plenty of rest because your immune system heals while you sleep
Your acupuncturist may even recommend certain teas that you can use to help you specifically
Another option we have available is a supplement called Andrographis Plus. Many patients notice that they begin to feel better shortly after taking it. Ask one of our staff members if this might be a good option for you.
Stay Healthy this Fall
This season doesn’t have to mean constant sneezing or sinus pain. With natural support, your body can stay balanced and resilient. If you are tired of guessing whether it’s a cold or allergies, acupuncture can help you move through fall with ease.
